DPWH chief admits “minimal delay” in implementation of projects due to COVID-19
July 8, 2020
Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar admitted on Wednesday that there is "minimal delay" in the implementation of priority infrastructure projects due to quarantine measures being implemented by the government to contain the spread of coronavirus disease.
In a virtual pre-SONA (State of the Nation Address) forum, Villar, however, said that despite the delay, the government has not shelved so far any of the lined up projects under Build, Build, Build program.
"Based on our studies, the construction continues. If there are delays, they are very minimal," he said.
He said even if some parts of the country, including Metro Manila, were placed under lockdown from March to May, the implementation of some projects continue.
He cited that because there were no traffic woes in metropolis, the contractors were able to easily push with the projects.
Asked if there are projects previously lined up but need to be cancelled due to budgetary constraints or other reasons, Villar said, "We have not cancelled any projects."
Villar also underscored the need for digital connectivity in this time of pandemic.
"The Digital Connectivity Program, which included the National Broadband Program and teh Free Wi-Fi in Public Places will build and enhance our existing digital infrastructure," he said. Celerina Monte/DMS
