A driver who was allegedly involved in a shootout in Cavite where a member of the Philippine National Police - Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) was killed surrendered on Sunday.
Brig. Gen Alexander Tagum, HPG director, said Reymund Zuñiga, is under custody by Cavite police after he surrendered around 9 pm.
Tagum said Zuñiga escaped after his passenger and an HPG officer were killed in a shootout in Dalahican, Cavite on November 6.
Before the encounter, personnel from HPG were conducting anti-carnapping operations and checking Zuñiga and his passenger, a certain Methusael Cebrian as their vehicle did not have a plate number and conduction sticker.
Policemen asked for their documents but Cebrian went out and fired at the HPG personnel. This prompted them to return fire which resulted in Cebrian's death.
Master Sergeant Julius Arcalas of the HPG was killed while one street sweeper was wounded.
President Rodrigo Duterte conveyed his deepest condolences and made sure full assistance will be provided to Arcalas' family.
Tagum said Senator Bong Go committed to relay the request for the immediate capability enhancement of the HPG such as bullet proof vests, body cameras and long firearms.
"While we mourn the passing away of our police officer, we will not falter because his sacrifice inspired and strengthened us all. We will make sure his death will not be in vain. Justice will be served," the HPG director said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
