Duterte reviewing proposal to put up PH virology institute – Palace

President Rodrigo Duterte is studying the proposal for the establishment of a Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines, Malacanang said on Friday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, in a statement, acknowledged that the government has to make "long-term plans" in the wake of coronavirus disease pandemic.

"President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is now reviewing the recommendation to establish a Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines that will serve as a premiere research institute in virology and diseases to strengthen local vaccine development in the country," he said.

Currently, the Philippines is not conducting a study for possible development of its own vaccine against COVID-19.

But Roque said the government is working hard to find local treatment for the coronavirus patients.

"The Palace views that while the Administration continues to conduct information, education, and communication campaign on the use of face masks/face shields as part of preventive efforts to minimize the spread of the coronavirus, government scientists are working diligently to find local treatment for COVID-19 patients," he said.

Roque noted the Department of Science and Technology recently approved the clinical trial for medicinal plants, lagundi and tawa-tawa, as supplement COVID-19 treatments.  The trials are in addition to the melatonin, convalescent plasma, and virgin coconut oil trials.

The Philippines, through the DOST, has also joined the global action in developing a vaccine against COVID-19, the spokesman said.

"We have been in touch with several institutions to collaborate on vaccine development and allow local manufacturing, if possible.  Our country is part of the World Health Organization Solidarity Trials for COVID-19 treatments," he said.

COVID-19 cases in the Philippines soared to 153,660 on Friday. Those who recovered reached 71,405 while deaths increased to 2,442. Celerina Monte/DMS
