Duterte to TRAIN oppositors: Don’t pay tax, but BIR to go after you
February 15, 2018
President Rodrigo Duterte has said those opposing the new tax reform measure may opt not to pay taxes.
Duterte made the statement on Tuesday night during his private meeting in Cebu, a transcript of the speech was released on Wednesday night.
However, Duterte warned those who would defy paying the necessary taxes under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Act would be dealt accordingly.
"There was a demonstration earlier against TRAIN. If you don't like TRAIN, then don't pay. It's as simple as that. You're against the taxes? Do not pay," he said.
But he added, "Do not blame me if the BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue) also will go after you. As simple as that."
Some quarters, including militant groups, have launched protests against the TRAIN law, which according to them has been causing more burden to the poor Filipinos.
Duterte signed into law the first package of the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program last December and it became effective this year.
A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court questioning the procedure in the House of Representatives in approving the law. Celerina Monte/DMS
