Duterte vetoes construction of two new PUP campuses in Laguna: Tolentino
August 14, 2019
President Rodrigo Duterte vetoed construction of two new campuses of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Laguna, Senator Francis Tolentino said on Wednesday.
"I want to let you know that I have the veto message of President Duterte wherein he vetoed the construction of a PUP campus in the municipality of Calauan in Laguna," Tolentino announced.
In a letter addressed to the Congress last August 8, Duterte said "there is no pressing need to elevate the Calauan Campus to a state-funded university."
"There are already a number of private, state, and local colleges and universities in the Province of Laguna and nearby towns which offer the same undergraduate and graduate courses," Duterte added.
Tolentino raised the president's decision to veto following a testimony made by a former student of PUP who was recruited to join the NPA. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
