Fresh cash aid eyed for jeepney drivers
June 4, 2020
The government is eyeing to give third tranche of cash assistance to jeepney drivers who have been displaced due to the coronavirus disease pandemic, Malacañang said on Thursday.
In a virtual press briefing in Davao City, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the additional cash aid would be based on Republic Act No. 11469 or the Bayanihan to Heal As One Act.
"It's being studied to give third month cash aid for the jeepney drivers who lost their livelihood because jeepneys are not allowed to operate," he said.
Under the Social Amelioration Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, public utility vehicle drivers, including jeepney drivers, were able to receive cash aid between P5,000 and P8,000 depending on the minimum regional wage rates.
The government has not allowed jeepneys to operate in the country due to concerns on minimum health standards since passengers are seated facing each other.
Roque earlier said the displaced jeepney drivers could be tapped as contact tracers for individuals who have exposure to COVID-19 patients. Celerina Monte/DMS
