Gov’t to revive bike lanes
May 29, 2020
The government is reviving bike lanes in Metro Manila.
In a televised meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday night, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade cited the experiment being conducted on Edsa.
If the experiment becomes effective, he said the government would make the bike lane on Edsa "permanent."
"I want to say that the bicycle lane will not be limited to Edsa, it will be limited to parts of the country if it works," he said.
In the same meeting, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said his office supports the establishment of bike lanes.
In line with this, Año said he issued a memorandum to all local government units in all major thoroughfares connected with each other to establish bicycle lanes to be used by the public.
He said the government wants bicycles to be one of the major modes of transportation of Filipinos, especially by workers whose place of work is not very far from their homes.
The decision to strengthen the use of bicycle lanes came as Metro Manila is set to shift to general community quarantine beginning June 1 from modified enhanced community quarantine.
In both MECQ and GCQ, the use of bicycles is allowed. Celerina Monte/DMS
