House votes on third reading to postpone barangay, SK polls to October

The House of Representatives Monday voted 211-29 approving on third reading a consolidated bill resetting the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) from May 14, 2018 polls to October 8, 2018.
Citizens Battle Against Corruption (Cibac) party-list Rep. Sherwin Tugna, who chairs the House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms, sponsored House Bill No. 7378 or the postponement measure.
House Senior Senior Deputy Minority Leader and Buhay Hayaang Yumabong (Buhay) party-list Rep. Lito Atienza and Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano were among the 29 lawmakers who voted against the passage of the measure.
Deputy Speaker and Batangas Rep. Raneo Abu “maintained that many people, including his constituents have supported the proposal.”
Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, who chairs the House committee on dangerous drugs, said “postponing the election does not go against the principles of democracy.” DMS
