Jail personnel to donate portion of salary to support gov’t fight vs COVID-19
April 14, 2020
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel will donate a portion of their salary to support the government’s efforts against COVID-19 pandemic.
Jail Chief Insp. Xavier Solda, BJMP spokesman, said the amount to be donated will be deducted from the salary of jail officers next month.
"Every organic personnel of the bureau from the Chief, BJMP to the lowest ranking officer, the Jail Officer 1, will donate a portion of their salaries," he said.
Solda said there are 14,875 personnel manning 468 district, city, and municipal jails across the country.
"1.5 percent from the base pay of each personnel is expected to generate at least P7.23 million to support government programs," he said.
Solda said the total amount collected by the BJMP will be turned over to the Office of the Civil Defense.
"We hope that this amount could somehow reinforce the needed support to help our people, especially the health workers who are in the frontlines," said BJMP Chief Jail Director Allan Iral.
"This is on top of initiatives of our personnel in the field to help their respective localities," he added.
Solda said persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in BJMP jails across the country are also working to help in the government's efforts on COVID-19 by giving free services in the fabrication and sewing of PPEs, face shields, and other protective equipment needed by frontline health workers.
