Magnitude 5.9 quake hits Sarangani province

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the province of Sarangani Saturday morning.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) the earthquake’s epicenter was recorded at eight kilometers northwest of Malapatan, Sarangani around 8:30 am.

Marry Ann Montion, Phivolcs science research assistant, said the tremor which was tectonic in origin has a depth of 74 km.

She added the quake was possibly caused by movement of a local fault in the province.

Phivolcs said based on reports, Intensity V were reported over Malapatan and Alabel in Sarangani province as well as in General Santos City.

While Intensity IV was reported in Digos City and Kiamba, Sarangani, then intensity III in Davao City and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.  Phivolcs also recorded Intensity I over Zamboanga City.
