Marawi city hall reopens despite fighting

July 10, 2017

MARAWI CITY — The city hall has resumed operations on Monday since fighting between the government forces and the Maute-Abu Sayyaf began on May 23. Some structures shook as the military continued its air strikes and artillery fire while   Mayor Majul Usman Gandamra led his staff and employees at a flag ceremony with soldiers at the premises of city hall. Gandamara said he will hold office every Monday and Wednesday. “Despite the threat, we have to operate even on a limited basis. It’s not every day but as much as possible we will be holding office Monday and Wednesday so we can make resolutions in support to our humanitarian efforts,” he said. Gandamra said they gave a copy of their employees’ names to the military. “The bulk of our operation to address the needs of our constituents is in our command center in Iligan City because most of our people displaced are staying there,” he said. Lt. Col. Christopher Tampus, commander of 1st Infantry Battalion which is securing the city hall, told reporters snipers remain. He appealed for patience. “We are in control now but it doesn’t mean it’s safe. Bur we assure we will help in the security matter,” Tampus said. As of Sunday, 39 civilians have died from the fighting while 379 militants and 87 soldiers have perished. DMS
