MARAWI CITY — A Philippine Marine soldier and 12 Maute-Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed on Monday in fresh fighting, a military official reported Tuesday.
Colonel Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of Task Group Ranao, told reporters the Marine was killed by a homemade bomb blasts as troops were closing in on the Maute and Abu Sayyaf gunmen.
Brawner said 13 Marines were also wounded. “Twelve of our enemies were also killed. They are concentrated in 10 hectares within the main battle zone,” Brawner said.
Brawner said a lot of improvised bombs were left by their enemies in the frontline, slowing down their progress.
Since fighting began on May 23 there are 152 government fatalities while 682 Maute-Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed. DMS
