The military captured two alleged members of New People's Army (NPA) after a 10-minute clash in Negros Occidental Tuesday morning.
Capt. Cenon Pancito III, spokesman of the 3rd Infantry Division, said the clash between the troops of 79th Infantry Battalion and the armed men occurred in the vicinity of Sitio Maitom, Barangay Old Poblacion, Escalante City around 8:13 am.
Pancito said Lt. Col. Emelito Thaddeus Logan, commander of the 79th IB, that captured were Jomar Agustin alias Mari and Revely Tayab alias Tara.
According to Logan, the operation was launched after they received a report from civilians on the presence of around seven fully armed men planning to sabotage 3-day peace summit in the city.
“We successfully prevented another terror attack of the CPP-NPA Terrorist targeting 3-day Peace Summit in Northern Negros, and thus I am commending the local residents for giving us accurate information on the movement and whereabouts of the communist-terrorists,” he said.
Pancito said recovered were two caliber 45 pistol and eight rounds of ammunition.
"None from the government side was hurt," he said.
"Recoveries from the encounter site include a hammock, one pouch of bandoleer, cellphone and kitchen paraphernalia," he added. Robina Asido/DMS
