MMDA convoy collides with two vehicles in EDSA-Shaw underpass

May 11, 2020

A Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) convoy  collided with two vehicles in Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City on Sunday evening.

According to the Eastern Police District (EPD), the incident transpired around 9:30 pm along EDSA- Shaw underpass involving a reefer van truck, L300 van, and a passenger van where MMDA Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago was riding.

Initial report said all vehicles were travelling in the same direction along EDSA northbound to Quezon City when the reefer van truck reached the levelled area near SM Megamall The L-300 driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle due to wet roads.

“Upon inquiry, the L300 van (driver) also said that when he (driver) noticed the presence of truck, he decreased his motion but allegedly, his vehicle slid, moving left and right and eventually hitting the center island of the road,” it said.

While the two vehicles were at the right side of EDSA-Shaw underpass, the passenger van noticed them and reduced speed.

The driver of the (reefer) van tried to apply the brakes but he claimed he encountered trouble in his brake mechanism and decided to veer right. But he hit the rear portion of the L300 van, police said.

“The gravity of impact caused the L-300 van to push sideward and ramp its front bumper on the center island of EDSA which resulted (in) heavier damage than the truck,” the report said.

“Fortunately, nobody sustained physical injury,” it added.

In a radio interview on Monday, Pialago said she was not hurt and is now working.

“I was not (brought to hospital) but those who are (at the passenger van) were not allowed to go to work after that accident last night,” she said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
