Navy decommissions BRP Bienvenido Salting
November 1, 2018
The Philippine Navy decommissioned one of its older ships named after a veteran of the 1951 Korean war on Wednesday.
Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad, Navy chief, led the decommissioning of BRP Bienvenido Salting at Commodore Posadas Wharf East, Fort San Felipe, Naval Base Cavite.
“Having been in the service for decades, it is understandable that one day, she will definitely reach her maximum operational limit,” said Empedrad in his remarks.
The ship, part of a naval task force that secured key areas in central and eastern Visayas, was named after Brig. General Bienvenido Salting. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Vicente Saling, son of the late general, his wife Myrna, son Lloyd Vincent and granddaughter Nica Adele.
Commander Jonathan Zata, Navy spokesman, said “the PN is looking forward to decommission more ships as it readies to receive newer Pohang class frigates that are currently being built in South Korea.”
Delivery of the first frigate will be in 2020 followed by another in 2021. DMS
