Nearly 1,000 got HIV through transactional sex

Nearly 1,000 individuals were infected with the human immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV) in 2016 after engaging in sex for money.
Based on the December 2016 HIV and AIDS Registry of the Philippines,. report, the Department of Health (DOH) said 985 individuals got HIV through transactional sex from January to December 2016.
“People who engage in transactional sex are those who report that they pay for sex, regularly accept payment for sex, or do both,” said the DOH report.
More than half of those who acquired HIV are those who paid for sex which were 509, broken into 505 males and four females.
Those who accepted payment for sex and got HIV numbered 317, of which 294 are males and 23 are females.
In December 2016, the DOH report said 66 individuals acquired HIV after engaging in transactional sex. DMS
