One soldier dead, 10 wounded in Sulu ambush

One soldier died while ten were wounded in an ambush incident in the province of Sulu on Thursday morning. Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command, said the troops of 10th Infantry Battalion were deployed to conduct rescue when they were fired upon by around 10 to 15 Abu Sayyaf (ASG) members at the vicinity of Brgy. Tandu Bagua, Patikul town 5:20 am. Petinglay said the troops were sent in response to the reported presence of the terrorist group carrying kidnap victims in the area. She said the 15 to 20 minute firefight resulted in the wounding of 11 soldiers, but one of them died while being treated. Petinglay said the government troops are still conducting pursuit and rescue operation. (Robina Asido/DMS)
