Pagasa declares onset of rainy season
June 12, 2020
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared the onset of rainy season on Friday.
In a statement, the state weather bureau said the start of rainy season was declared after "the occurrence of scattered thunderstorms, Tropical Depression 'Butchoy' and the southwest monsoon (Habagat) during the last five days".
According to Pagasa, these three factors brought significant amount of rains over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.
"This satisfies the criteria of the start of the rainy season in the areas affected by Habagat which will continue to experience scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms in the coming days," Pagasa said.
"However, such rain events may be followed by dry periods (monsoon break) that could last for several days to two weeks," it added.
Pagasa also advised the public and all the concerned agencies "to take precautionary measures against the impacts of the rainy season." Robina Asido/DMS
