May 13, 2018

The Palace on Sunday expressed sorrow on the death of former Senate President Edgardo Angara. “We mourn the sudden passing of one of our great leaders and statesmen, Senate President Edgardo Angara, who died at age 83,” said Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque in a Viber message. “Senator Angara has served the Philippines in several administrations and in various capacities, the last of which was as Special Envoy to the European Union under the Duterte administration,” he added. “Mr. Angara’s contribution to nation-building was immense and his name will always be prominent in the pages of our country’s modern political history. He will be missed,” Roque noted. Angara died of a heart attack Sunday, his son Senator Sonny Angara said in this Twitter account. In a statement, European Union (EU) Ambassador Franz Jessen also mourned Angara's death. “I am saddened to hear that Senator Ed Angara, a statesman and a good friend, has passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Ed was a great patriot and a true friend of the EU,” he said. It can be recalled that, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Angara as the special envoy to the European Union last year. Former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Angara " was a true leader who instituted reforms for the betterment of the country. "He will be missed but his valuable contributions to the country will never be forgotten." Robina Asido/DMS
