Malacanang welcomed on Wednesday the approval by the Commission on Appointments on the appointment of Commission on Elections chairman Sheriff M. Abas.
In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque expressed hope that Abas' appointment would help regain the public trust to the poll body.
"We are confident that Chairperson Abas would carry out his duties with integrity, excellence and competence to regain public trust in the electoral body," he said.
Abas replaced Andres Bautista who quit from the post, but shortly after his resignation, he was impeached by the House of Representatives.
Bautista's estranged wife accused him of having billion of pesos ill-gotten wealth, which the former poll chief denied. Celerina Monte/DMS
