Palace respects Senate move to question Sereno’s ouster via quo warranto
May 17, 2018
Malacanang said Thursday its respects the Senate for its resolution asking the Supreme Court to review its decision to oust Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno through a quo warranto proceeding.
"Well, you know the senators are free to sign such a resolution. The resolution, of course, forms part of their inherent legislative powers," Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press briefing.
But Roque cited the statement of Senator Panfilo Lacson that the resolution seemed premature since there are still no articles of impeachment being forwarded to the Senate by the House of Representatives.
An impeachment complaint against Sereno is pending at the Lower House.
At least 13 senators reportedly signed the Senate resolution that challenges the Supreme Court's decision to remove Sereno through a quo warranto petition.
Of the 24 senators, 13 have so far signed the resolution, as of Wednesday. They were Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, Senators Sherwin Gatchalian, Sonny Angara, Grace Poe, Francis Escudero, Ralph Recto, Joel Villanueva, Francis Pangilinan, Franklin Drilon, Antonio Trillanes IV, Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino, and detained Senator Leila de Lima.
