Palace says open to any proposal to help Taal victims

Malacanang on Sunday said they are open to study any proposal that will be beneficial to victims after Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto expressed his plan on creating a Taal Commission, like the Pinatubo Commission that helped victims of the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption.
“All good proposals of course will be studied and will be implemented if it will be beneficial to our people,” said Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo in an interview over dzIQ on Sunday.
In a radio interview on Saturday, Recto, who is from Batangas, said he is reviewing the Republic Act No. 7637 that created the Pinatubo Commission and appropriated P10 billion for aid, relief, resettlement, rehabilitation, livelihood services and infrastructure support to the residents of Pampanga.
Panelo said it is up to President Rodrigo Duterte if he wants to certify it as urgent.
On the suggestion of Deputy Speaker and 1-Pacman party-list Rep. Mikee Romero to create a Taal task force, Panelo said they don’t see the need for now as relief and rehabilitation are all in place.
“For now, I don’t see the need for it because everything is in place that’s why the president hailed it,” Panelo said.
Panelo said the Office of the President is ready to release their own funds if need arises.
Duterte is scheduled to visit Batangas province again on Monday to lead the distribution of food packs for families affected by the phreatic eruption of Taal Volcano.
Panelo said he will visit the affected areas to check on the evacuees.
Early this week, Duterte went to Batangas City to check the situation. Ella Dionisio/DMS
