Palace sees “Christmas economics” to happen despite pandemic
December 7, 2020
Malacanang expressed optimism on Monday that "Christmas economics" will take place as people will really spend during this holiday season despite the coronavirus pandemic.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the statement amid observations that only few people still go to shopping malls despite government's move to relax some requirements.
"I think Christmas economics will happen," he said as he cited reports that many people go to Divisoria, an area in Manila known for cheaper goods, "tiangge," and night markets, among others.
Roque said the government is just reminding the people that while Christmas season only comes once a year, they have to protect themselves by observing the minimum health standards to prevent coronavirus disease infection.
Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez previously said people still seemed to be reluctant in going to the malls due to the COVID-19 fear. Celerina Monte/DMS
