Palace supports moves to honor late Senator Miriam Santiago
September 28, 2017
Malacanang expressed support on Thursday on the move of the Senate to confer an honor to late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
"The Office of the President welcomes moves to confer the late Senator Miriam Defensor - Santiago the Quezon Service Cross," Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a press briefing.
He said Santiago's contribution to the country "is beyond question." He added that President Rodrigo Duterte "highly respects" Santiago.
Some senators have nominated Santiago to be a recipient of the Quezon Service Cross, the highest award the state accords to its civil servants.
The proposal was made as the country commemorates Santiago's first year death anniversary on September 29. Santiago, 71, succumbed to lung cancer last year.
Prior to becoming a senator, Santiago, a lawyer, also held positions in the judiciary and executive branches. Celerina Monte/DMS
