Phivolcs reminds public to always be ready after magnitude 6.2 quake off Sarangani
December 16, 2020
The public should remain alert following a powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake that jolted the Soccsksargen region on Wednesday morning.
In the "Laging Handa" televised press briefing, Science and Technology Undersecretary and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology chief Renato Solidum said while the tremor that hit parts of Mindanao might not have brought big damage, the people should not be complacent.
"So far, the people have to review their readiness in the shaking and then in coastal areas, (they should always know) the tsunami evacuation procedure," he said.
He said Phivolcs monitored "not so strong" aftershocks after the magnitude 6.1 earthquake with epicenter near Alabel, Sarangani.
Solidum recalled that on December 15 last year, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Davao del Sur.
He said the latest tremor offshore Sarangani was not connected to the series of strong quakes that struck parts of Mindanao during the latter part of last year.
The official said Phivolcs, along with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the local government units, and other concerned agencies, continued with their earthquake drills. Celerina Monte/DMS
