PNP asks media to “deliver the truth and the full picture” on SWS survey

September 28, 2017

The Philippine National Police asked the media on Thursday to help "deliver the truth and the full picture" to change perception of people following the Social Weather Stations survey that most  Filipinos believed that suspects killed in police operation did not fight back.

When asked how it will change the perception of the public, PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos said: "You are our partners... At the end of the day let's stick to the facts. Show the people the truth and because our motive is to bring the whole picture", Carlos said in a press conference in Camp Crame.

The SWS survey which was conducted on June 23 to June 26 said 54 percent from the 1,200 respondents agreed drug suspects killed in police operations did not fight back.

Carlos said the 85 casualties from the PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines is proof the suspects fought back during police operations.

"They said they did not fought back. How can we explain now the PNP and AFP losing 85 troopers, public servants who died during police operations and another 200 for PNP officers critically wounded?", he said.

He said the 3,850 drug suspects who died in police operations were investigated by the PNP Internal Affairs Service.

"In the investigation of the Internal Affairs Service it seems that some of these are dropped and close meaning they did not saw any irregularities. They did not see violations in the police operational procedure and they saw that the police involved in the incident just defended himself", Carlos said.

Carlos said they are taking the survey as a challenge to communicate to the people.

"We respect the conduct of the survey, we respect the response of the respondents...To us this is a challenge for us to be able to reach out or bring to the public the true and full picture", he said. Alanna Ambi/DMS
