PNP asks Senate to use diligence in protecting rights of those accused in illegal drugs operations
September 25, 2019
The Philippine National Police ( PNP) on Tuesday asked the Senate to exercise due diligence in protecting the rights of those involved in illegal drugs against undue persecution.
They made the statement after a total of 17 senators approved a motion allowing the Senate Blue Ribbon and justice committee to release to the public the identities of alleged ninja cops who were revealed in an executive session last week.
"Let the axe fall where it may. We bow to the discretion of the Senate if it so desires to make public the names of PNP members whom it tags as ninja cops," said Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, in a statement.
"We request, however that the Senate exercise due dilligence in protecting the rights of these persons against undue persecution," he added.
Banac said the PNP only has the best interest of justice, fairness and good governance in uncovering the truth behind the alleged involvement of cops in recycling drug evidence.
It was no less than the PNP and DILG chiefs who want those cops involved in illegal drugs to be identified.
Based on their data, out of the 87 ninja cops included in the government's list, only 22 are being monitored by the PNP. Ella Dionisio/DMS
