PNP chief denies holding birthday party

August 16, 2020

The chief of the Philippine National Police on Sunday denied that he hosted a party inside the Navy Base compound in Baguio City over the weekend.

In a statement, Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa said what happened was only a dinner and health protocols were strictly observed during the event.

“There is no truth to the allegations spreading on social media,” Gamboa said.

“There was no party or concert. It was a dinner that ended at 9:30 pm… social distancing was strictly followed and the food was individually catered,” he said.

“All of us went through the triage as per the City of Baguio’s regulations,” he added.

The PNP chief said Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong was well aware of his presence and the activities were duly coordinated.

“Today, Mayor Magalong and I had a meeting with the PNP officials from Baguio and Cordillera to brief me on the peace and order situation of the region. May I suggest that you get in touch with Mayor Magalong for further clarification,” Gamboa said.

In a message to reporters, Baguio City police director Col. Allen Co said a low key testimonial parade was to be given to Gamboa at the Philippine Military Academy.

“But as I understand it, in deference to the current situation, the leadership of the DND (Department of National Defense), AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) and the honoree himself decided to forego with the activity.”

Gamboa, retiring next month, is a member of the PMA class of 1986.

A text message circulated on social media last Saturday saying Gamboa and his team had a party, including a band playing, inside the Navy Base compound.

Netizens questioned the said event as the country is still currently facing a pandemic crisis, which prohibits social gathering.  Ella Dionisio/DMS
