PNP chief remains at a loss why cops persist in unlawful acts

August 1, 2018

The Philippine National Police (PNP) remained at a loss why many policemen were arrested due to their suspected involvement on criminal acts.

In an interview over dzMM Wednesday, PNP Director Oscar Albayalde said he does not know why policemen are being arrested despite higher salaries and benefits from the government.

"I have been asking them why are they doing this? What else do they need from government," said Albayalde.

The government has doubled the salaries of PNP officers and personnel but several policemen have been arrested for illegal drugs, extortion, kidnapping and other crimes.

“Despite the fact their salaries have been doubled by the government, there are still some who still do these things," said Albayalde.

Albayalde could not hide his anger when he confronted three policemen from Taguig accused of kidnapping at the National Capitol Region Police Office.

“Is that what you learned in criminology? To extort, to kidnap?," said Albayalde as the policemen remained silent.

Albayalde warned erring policemen  to change their ways or face punitive actions similar to the government's "relentless and chilling"  war on illegal drugs.

“Just as we are relentless and chilling in our war on drugs, we will also be relentless, resolute and chilling in our internal cleansing program,” he said in a speech at the NCRPO in Taguig City.

Albayalde said the PNP is monitoring around  1,000 police officers with alleged involvement in illegal activities. "We don't know if there are others. We have to remain sharp," he told reporters.

On Tuesday, operatives from the PNP Counter-Intelligence Task Force (CITF) arrested three police officers from the Valenzuela City for alleged extortion activities victimizing junk shop owners.

A policeman was killed and three cops were arrested in Taguig City for alleged kidnapping also on Tuesday. DMS
