July 10, 2020

The chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday ordered the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) to conduct further investigation on the death of a cadet last July 8.

According to Brigadier General Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, General Archie Francisco Gamboa ordered an investigation to prevent the incident from happening.

“PNP Chief, Police General Archie Gamboa expressed his condolences to the parents and relatives of 4CL Alvarado who’s father is also a member of PNPA Tagapagpatupad Class of 1992,” Banac said.

“The PNP chief also ordered the PNPA administration to conduct further inquiry and investigation to avoid such unfortunate incidents,” he added.

Based on the investigation of the PNPA administration, Alvarado collapsed while participating in evening mess formation last Wednesday around 5:30 pm.

His co-cadet brought him to the Academy Health Service and  referred to Qualimed Hospital in Sta Rosa City, Laguna due to difficulty of breathing.

His mother was also in the hospital after she learned the incident.

“The cadet was in the hospital at 6:05 pm and appropriate medical intervention was immediately given to the patient cadet. Unfortunately, he didn't make it and was declared dead at 9:56 pm,” according to the academy.

Major General Jose Chiquito Malayo, PNPA director, noted the PNP chief’s instruction as the academy will implement additional measures while the initial stage of training the PNPA Class of 2024 is still ongoing.

Among those initiatives are mandatory intake of minimum ten glasses of water of all cadets; providing two canteen cups filled with water in bandolier as part of their uniform; drills are momentarily in the shaded area for the moment; and progressive exercises will be in two parts – three rounds of 600 meter per round around the parade ground during the first day then four rounds after three days up to Friday.

Target is ten rounds for the Incorporation Day.

At present, the new PNP Class has 306 newly-acquired cadets consists of 254 males and 52 females.
