PNP says firearms license of broacaster expired even before outburst vs Cabinet member

June 9, 2019

The Philippine National Police ( PNP) on Saturday said the expiration of the license to own and possess firearms of radio broadcaster Erwin Tulfo lapsed even before his issue with Social Welfare Secretary Rolando Bautista.

Police Colonel Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, said in a radio interview  the license of Tufo expired last May.

“Even before (the incident) it is already expired. We just did not notice because we are focused on the elections,” said Banac.

Because of  Tulfo's outburst against Bautista and recall of his security detail, the PNP also checked the status of his license as it was reported that he owns around seven firearms.

“They checked and found out that it’s already expired so we reminded him,” said Banac.

“The people may ask, why only Tulfo? Our Oplan Katok campaign is continuous,” he explained.

Banac reminded the public that recalling firearms once its license is expired  is a regular function of the PNP.

Last Friday, Banac in a press briefing said the PNP ordered for the recall or temporary safe keeping of Tulfo’s firearms.

In case Tulfo did not surrender or failed to turn over his firearms, Tulfo can be subjected to a search warrant.

“Remember, all firearms holder or owners need to have... possession (of) a license to own and possess firearms. Without this, there is no reason for an individual to keep firearms even if these are registered or licensed firearms,” he said.

Banac said the license of his brothers, are still valid.

He said once Tulfo renewed his license, they will immediately return his firearms. Ella Dionisio/DMS
