PNP to help family of slain Misamis Oriental cop

November 29, 2019

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said they will provide assistance to the family of slain cop in the Misamis Oriental grenade blast.

“The Philippine National Police mourns the death of another hero cop. We give our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of Police Senior Master Sergeant Jason Magno of Initao Police Station in Misamis Oriental,” said Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, in a press briefing.

Banac said Magno made a supreme sacrifice by covering the grenade with his own body to save innocent civilian lives.

“He truly lives up to his sworn duty, to serve and protect even if it costs his life,” he added.

According to Banac, PNP’s officer-in-charge, Police Lieutenant General Archie Francisco Gamboa assured to the family of Magno they will get full support on financial assistance and benefits as well as Police Senior Master Sergeant Alice Balido, who was severely wounded, and managed to respond courageously and single handedly contained the threat by shooting the suspect.

The family of Magno will receive death benefits which include P250,000 pesos from the President';s Social Fund; P141,000 to P181,000 Special Financial Assistance (SFA) from PNP; Burial benefits worth P50,000; and P200,000 gratuity from the National Police Commission (Napolcom).

“As a member of the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund his family may also be entitled to death insurance,” said Banac.

These death benefits are on top of the estimated P15,000 pesos monthly lifetime pension from the PNP and roughly the same amount of pension for five years from the Napolcom.

Banac said Gamboa is scheduled to visit Magno’s wake after the opening of Southeast Asian Games.

A total of 16 people were injured, including Balido after a suspect who has a personal grudge against a Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) employee in the area lobbed a grenade when police officers tried to stop him from making a scene in the area.

“We urge to the public to include in their prayers the fast recovery of Sergeant Balido and the wounded students,” he said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
