The Philippine Navy opened its newest naval station, which was one of the coastal villages in Zamboanga City used by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in their attack of the city in 2013.

Rear Admiral Rene Medina, commander of the Zamboanga City-based Naval Forces Western Mindanao with Navy Vice Commander, Rear Admiral Rommel Judge Ong, led the opening of the Naval Station Rio Hondo last Tuesday.

Rio Hondo  was one of the city’s coastal villages where MNLF rebels then led by their  late Commander Haber Malik,  landed from Sulu and Basilan on Sept. 9, 2013 to capture the city and set up their own government.

Medina said the new naval station will be manned by various Fleet-Marine operating units such as the Naval Operations Unit 1, Combat Support Brigade , Inshore Boat Battalion  and Naval Air Unit . DMS
