July 8, 2020
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said Wednesday she tested positive for the coronavirus disease ( COVID-19).
''I wish to announce to our Quezon City citizens that I tested positive in my last COVID-19 test,'' said Belmonte in a statement.
''As of now, I feel all right and I do not feel any symptoms,'' she added.
Belmonte said her office will be closed temporarily for disinfection.
Quezon City has the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country, next to Cebu City, Department of Health data said as of July 4.
She said she may have been infected through visiting health centers, hospitals, areas under special concern lockdown and communities to find out their needs.
''This happened despite taking all precautions, wearing face masks and frequent hand washing and social distancing,'' she said.
''I know that from the start, there is a possibility this could happen but I do not regret this. I have prepared myself that this could happen,'' said Belmonte.
''I hope this serves to remind people that COVID-19 is something people should be careful,'' she said. DMS
