Reporting of death of high-profile inmates not covered by Data Privacy Act – Palace
July 21, 2020
Malacañang said on Tuesday that reporting of the death of high profile inmates in New Bilibid Prison is not covered by the Data Privacy Act.
In a virtual press briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed the death of Jaybee Sebastian.
"As to whether the Data Privacy (Act) is applicable, from my understanding, Muntinlupa should report the detainees who died and that I think is not covered by the Data Privacy Law because they died actually not only because of COVID (coronavirus) but also died while in custody of the national penitentiary," he said.
Guevarra summoned to his office Bureau of Corrections Director General Gerald Bantag to shed light on the death of some high-profile inmates at NBP in Muntinlupa City.
He said that nine inmates, including Sebastian, died at the national penitentiary.
Bantag has refused to disclose the names of the inmates who perished from COVID-19, citing the Data Privacy Act.
Sebastian was one of those who testified against detained opposition Senator Leila de Lima over her alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade inside NBP.
De Lima, a staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, denied the allegation against her. Celerina Monte/DMS
