Roque insists minimum health protocols observed in crammed Cebu airport opening
November 29, 2020
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Saturday said minimum health standards were followed when he attended the official opening of the Bantayan Island Airport in Cebu last November 27.
In a statement, Roque said he was taken aback by the huge crowd and was later informed that the local officials did not expect the huge turnout of people as well.
“The venue was open air as it was held by the beach but I had to reiterate for the audience to keep on their masks. As a precautionary measure, I observed physical distancing and reminded those who were present to observe the minimum health standards,” he said.
“Also, I did not shake hands and I wore a face mask,” he added.
The spokesperson said he had no control over the huge gathering of people as he was only a guest and the event was organized by the local government officials.
“Be that as it may, they advised the public to wear face masks and there was general compliance, as seen in the pictures that came out,” Roque said.
“As the economy gradually reopens, let us continue to take good care of our health so we can work for our families and help the country,” he added.
Roque issued the statement after photos came out showing that social distancing, one of the minimum health protocols that the government has been espousing to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease, was not apparently observed in the event. Ella Dionisio/DMS
