Special police unit to be formed to go after street criminals – DILG chief
October 18, 2020
The Department of Interior and Local Government will create a special unit following the order of President Rodrigo Duterte to train members of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) to go after street criminals.
In a radio interview on Sunday, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said members of the HPG have already started their training.
“I told them to submit the requirements on the needed motorcycle and how many personnel they still need to train. These are the special units that we will create to run after criminals using motorcycles,” he said.
“So we will create a strategy, it would be a combination of uniformed and non-uniformed policemen just for that purpose. We will get rid of the criminals in the street,” he added.
On Friday, HPG director Police Brig. Gen. Alexander Tagum said they will conduct more training to cater not only to those currently assigned under their unit but even those who are with other local police units nationwide.
HPG also said around 50 special action force (SAF) troopers are currently undergoing training as motorcycle cops under their ride course training. Ella Dionisio/DMS
