An alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed in a shootout with law enforcement in Zamboanga Sibugay on Saturday morning.
Police Brigadier General Jesus Cambay, Police Regional Office 9 director, said operatives implemented search warrant in Barangay Masao, Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay at 5:45 am against Salip Adzhar Alijam, also known as Alip Adjal Hamsa Grandad, for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Cambay said Alijam was killed after he fired upon the operating troops.
“The neutralized subject person is an ASG/KFRG (Abu Sayyaf Group/ Kidnap for Ransom Group) member based in Sulu under the late ASG-Sub Leader Alhabsy Misaya,” the regional director said.
Cambay said Alijam was involved in the kidnapping of six Indonesian fishermen last August 3, 2016 in the sea waters of Sabah, Malaysia.
He added the suspect was personally identified by one of the Indonesian kidnap victims as one of their abductors in the coordination made by the operating units with the Indonesian Consul in Davao City.
Recovered during the operation were a hand grenade, gun, and rifle.
Cambay commended the efforts of the operating troops.
“We call for unity and solidarity to fight against those who attempt to disturb the peace and tranquility of Zamboanga Peninsula,” he said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
