SWS estimates 3.5 million were stranded in other places due to quarantine

August 5, 2020

Around 3.5 million or 5.1 percent of adult Filipinos, mostly from Balanced Luzon and Mindanao, were stranded in other places due to the community quarantine to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Social Weather Stations.

SWS said the number is based on the 2020 projected population of 69.5 million adults.

Released on Tuesday, SWS said it is slightly lower compared to the estimated 4.1 million working Filipinos were stranded in the May survey.

The proportion of those stranded in other places because of the community quarantine was highest at eight percent or around 1.3 million individuals, whose homes are in Mindanao.

This was followed by 5.9 percent or around 770,000 of those whose permanent homes are in the Visayas.

Around 4.1 percent or close to 1.3 million have permanent homes are in Balance Luzon, and 2.1 percent or an estimated 200,000 among those whose permanent homes are in Metro Manila.

SWS said the July figures were not statistically different from May , where 6.4 percent whose permanent homes were in Mindanao, 5.3 percent for those based in Balance Luzon, 5 percent from Visayas, and 4.8 percent in Metro Manila.

The proportion of those stranded by community quarantines was higher at 6.5 percent or estimated 2.3 million among men than the 3.6 percent or estimated 1.3 million among women.

Most of the 790,000 stranded individuals were aged 18-24.

The survey was conducted last July 3 to 6 using mobile phone and computer-assisted telephone interviewing to 1,555 adult Filipinos.

It was also done while Metro Manila and four nearby provinces were still under general community quarantine.  Ella Dionisio/DMS
