Tricycle back riders to be allowed if they have barriers: MMDA
October 19, 2020
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday said tricycles will be allowed to have back riders as long as they will have barriers once the motorcycle taxis resume.
“Once motorcycle taxis are allowed (to resume), we will also allow tricycles to have backrider as long as they will also have barriers,” MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said in a press briefing.
He said once the Interagency Task Force (IATF) allow the resumption of motorcycle taxis, it will also give tricycle drivers more income.
According to the IATF guidelines, only one passenger is allowed to ride tricycles.
On Sunday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the House Committee on Transportation released a resolution continuing their study on motorcycle taxis.
Garcia said motorcycle taxis are required to have barriers as part of health safety protocols.
The MMDA official also said more jeepney routes will be opened in the coming days amid increasing demand for public transportation in Metro Manila based on suggestions of the Metro Manila mayors in another meeting with Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Chairman Martin Delgra.
“Within this week, we will make an announcement on the new routes that will be opened in NCR,” Garcia said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
