Trudeau brought up human rights, killings in meeting with Duterte

November 14, 2017

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he mentioned the issue of extra-judicial killings to President Rodrigo Duterte in their bilateral meeting.

In a press conference Tuesday, Trudeau said Canada is concerned with the issue of human rights, rule of law and extra-judicial killings.

"As I mentioned to President Duterte, we are concerned with human rights, with extra-judicial killings. (I) impressed upon him the need for respect for the rule of law," Trudeau said.

He said Duterte is receptive with his comments and they had a very "cordial and positive" exchange of conversation.

He added Canada has earned a reputation for being able to have strong, frank and firm discussion around rule of law and human rights with their partners around the world.

"Canada is a country that always brings up human rights issues and strongly engages in line with our values everywhere in the world," he said.

He said he offered Duterte support and help for the Philippines as a friend. Ella Dionsio/DMS
