Two alleged members of NPAs killed in battle with military in Quezon

Two alleged members of New People’s Army (NPA) were killed while a militiaman was wounded in an encounter in Quezon province last Saturday, the military reported on Sunday night.

Capt. Patrick Jay Retumban, public affairs chief of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, said the nearly five-minute firefight resulted in the death of two rebels who bodies were recovered by the government troops after the clash and injury of a militiaman.

“The wounded Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) member is undergoing medical treatment in a hospital and is now in a safe condition,” he said.

Retumban said based on initial report troops of 59 th Infantry (CAFGU) Battalion were conducting combat patrol when they encountered the rebels in the vicinity of Brgy San Andres, Lopez, Quezon around 11:15 pm.

“The group of terrorists is believed to be under Joseph Delos Santos alias “Ka Bingot” of Platoon 2 of Sub-Regional Military Area (SRMA) operating in Quezon,” he said.

Retumban said a squad- size of CAFGU went on patrol after receiving a report a group of NPAs will plot an attack at San Andres patrol base.

“The patrolling CAFGU were able to track the location of the enemies and clashes ensued,” he said.

Retumban said the firefight also resulted in the recovery of firearms and explosive materials of the rebels.

He said among items seized after clearing the site were an M16 rifle, AK-47, ICOM radio, two grenades and three backpacks.

Retumban said the Philippine National Police (PNP) Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) is gathering evidence while government troops are conducting pursuit operation against the rebels.

“The government troops are continuing their pursuit operations against the terrorists. Checkpoints are also being expanded in the area,” he said. Robina Asido/DMS
