ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat -- Two persons were killed as a bomb exploded Tuesday night, authorities said.
Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, the regional military commander, said the bomb went off around 8:40 p.m. while soldiers were pursuing a man who left a package. Another explosive was recovered and defused.
“Before our men captured the suspect, the bomb already exploded,” he told a local radio station.
Mayor Marites Pallasigue said the fatalities were Davy Shane Alayon, 7; who expired at the hospital and Lenie Umbrod, 52.
Two of the 35 wounded victims, she added, remained in critical condition.
“We terminated the celebration of our 7th Hamungaya Festival and 61st foundation anniversary. The police and military tightened the security,” Pallasigue said.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the bomb attack.
Sultan Kudarat provincial police chief Superintendent Celestino Daniel said there is no evidence the blast was carried out by ISIS. “We cannot confirm that because we still have no information,” he said. DMS
