Two killed as Maring makes landfall in Quezon

Two persons were reported killed in a landslide in Taytay, Rizal, the Taytay Municipal Risk Reduction Management Office said Tuesday.

Jude Fundal, 18 and Justin Fundal, 14 perished in the landslide that occurred at Hapay Ng Manga, Barangay Dolores, said Luis Nolasco of the Taytay Municipal Risk Reduction Management Office in a phone interview with Daily Manila Shimbun.

"The landslide hit their home at 2 am and the children died while they were asleep. Their parents were able to escape," said Nolasco.

Rains were caused by Tropical Depression Maring, which made landfall in Mauban, Quezn ay 9 am,

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) put 16 provinces under tropical cyclone warning signal number one as Tropical Depression Maring landfall in Mauban Quezon on Tuesday morning..

Weather forecaster Nikos Penaranda said Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Northern Quezon Southern Aurora, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Bataan and Pangasinan are under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal 1.

He said Maring has maximum sustained winds of 60 kph and gusts up to 100 kph. It made landfall in Mauban, Quezon at 9:00 am. and was last spotted along the Laguna lake area, Paete, Laguna and Jala-Jala area in Rizal.

Penaranda said the tropical depression is moving west northwest at 15 kph. It will pass through Manila Bay, Bataan and Zambales.

Cavite, Laguna and Batangas are under the orange warning signal which means they may experience heavy rains of 15 mm to 30 mm an hour and floods, he said.

He said Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Zambales, Rizal, Quezon and Metro Manila which has been downgraded on Tuesday morning under yellow warning. They may experience estimated rainfall of 7 mm to 15 mm an hour and possible floods.

Penaranda said Typhoon Lani which is last seen 865 km east of Basco Batanes will not affect the Philippines. He said it is going towards  Taiwan, and eastern China. Alanna Ambi/DMS
