November 18, 2020

Two motorcycle riding suspects died while one cop was wounded in a shootout in Calauan, Laguna early Wednesday morning.

The Philippine National Police- Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) said a victim reported he was robbed at gunpoint by the two suspects around 7:30 pm last Tuesday along the national road of Barangay Lamot 2, Calauan, Laguna.

This prompted joint elements of Regional Highway Patrol Unit- Calabarzon, Calauan Muncipal Police Station, and 1st Laguna Provincial Mobile Force Company to conduct hot pursuit and were able to locate the suspects in their alleged hideout at Purok 3, Brgy Balayhangin, Calauan.

As police approached the area, the suspects opened fire.

Both suspects were wounded and a member of the arresting team,  Staff Sergeant Diosdado Casupang Jr. was hit in the ankle.

Three wounded persons were immediately evacuated to the nearest hospital but the two suspects were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Authorities recovered the suspects’ firearms, the reported stolen motorcycle and another motorcycle with no plate number.

According to Laguna police, no identification was obtained from the suspects.

“The use of deadly force is always our last recourse, and we are fortunate that only one fellow law enforcer got injured in the firefight. Nonetheless, this will not deter the HPG in doing everything in its power to go after criminals and bring them to justice the soonest possible time,” HPG Director  Brig. Gen Alexander Tagum said.

Last Tuesday, two motorcycle thieves died in an encounter with HPG personnel in Bulacan.

General Debold Sinas, PNP chief, quickly commended HPG for their prompt response to these carjacking incidents.

“Police operations and crime prevention through patrolling & strengthened police visibility are the doable actions that form the backbone of the overall PNP mission to serve and protect the people,” Sinas said. Ella Dionisio/DMS
