Two PCG personnel in critical condition

July 17, 2020

Two Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel who were found positive for COVID-19 were in critical condition, the Coast Guard spokesman said on Friday.

"We are closely monitoring two (of our personnel who are) in critical condition and now they are now recovering at the hospital," Commodore Armando Balilo said in a radio interview on Friday.

Balilo said most of the 313 PCG personnel who were tested positive were asymptomatic.

"Our troops are strong that is why most of those who were tested positive are asymptomatic. But we will not be complacent," he said.

Balilo said most of the infected PCG personnel are swabbers at the airport, bus drivers of "Libreng Sakay program" of DOTr, ship crews who transport locally stranded individuals, personnel at the quarantine control checkpoints and at the headquarters of PCG.

"We are very careful, all of our personnel follow the health protocols and always wear PPE. We cannot just prevent the exposure because we are in the frontline," he said.

"Those PCG personnel who were tested positive. They are now recovering at the designated quarantine facilities for the frontline workers," he added.

Despite the increasing number of COVID-19 cases within their ranks, the PCG assures to provide continuous service.

"We recruited health practitioners. We have a lot of recruits who will graduate soon. They are on standby if there is a need for additional manpower so that we will continuously provide services despite the pandemic," he said.
