Two solons, mayor and others injured as wooden bridge collapses in Zamboanga housing inspection

April 26, 2018

Two congressmen, a mayor, an official of the National Housing Authority (NHA) were among those who sustained minor injuries after they fell into murky waters when a wooden bridge collapsed Thursday morning in Zamboanga City.

Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez, Zamboanga City Rep. Celso Lobregat, Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Beng Climaco-Salazar, NHA Regional Director Alfonso Borlagdan and others fell while inspecting a housing unit in Sitio Hongkong, Barangay Rio Hondo for those who were displaced by the Zamboanga siege in 2013.

Benitez, who chairs the House committee on housing and urban development, said the housing project,  endangers residents due to the bridge's poor maintenance.

He tweeted the incident and sent photos to social media.

“We fell in the bridge as we were going to the housing on stilts in Barangay Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City. The bridge's lack of maintenance and construction of the houses endangers residents, especially children," said Benitez. DMS=
