Uber trips no longer covered by PAMI: Lizada

August 4, 2017

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) board member Aileen Lizada said Friday  Uber did not say truth  in the Senate hearing on Thursday saying their passengers is 100 percent insured through Passenger Accident Management and Insurance Agency (PAMI).

"For those who were present yesterday in the Senate, the senators asked Uber if the passengers are covered, they said 100 percent. This is not true", Lizada told reporters through Viber.

Yves Gonzales, head of public policy in Uber Philippines, told the Senate their riders are covered with PAMI insurance "every ride".

"Just to be clear all Uber trips have PAMI even though they do not have provisional authority or Certificate of Public Convenience. They are covered by government mandated Pami insurance", Gonzales said.

He said PAMI insurance is one of the requirements of Uber to their partner operators.

Gonzales explained PAMI insurance is "one of the government mandated insurance for PUVs" with P200,000 coverage.

But Lizada said that is not so.

" I spoke to PAMI after we issued our August 2016 directive that we suspended TNVS ( Transport Network Vehicle Services) applications. PAMI no longer insured Uber", Lizada said.

She said Uber is no longer covered by PAMI after August 2016.

Uber is ensured by UCPB general auto passenger accident isurance", she said.

The insurance of Uber to UCPB is "very limited" which does not have "no fault indemnity" and "all risk package", Lizada said.

"No fault indemnity means even if it is the fault of the jeep or bus they will still be paid by the insurance", she said.

"All risk means taking into consideration extreme conditions example the vehicle is out of line, if the driver is drunk, if the driver is under the influence of drugs", Lizada explained. Alanna Ambi/DMS
