Horn dethrones Pacquiao in boxing upset

Manny Pacquiao lost his World Boxing Organization welterweight championship to Jeff Horn of Australia on Sunday in Brisbane.

Pacquiao lost on all three scorecards 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113 in one of boxing's biggest upsets. It was Horn's 17th victory with no loss and one draw. Pacquiao took his seventh loss against 59 wins.

In the undercard, Jerwin Acanja defeated Teiru Kinoshira of Japan by TKO in the seventh round to retain his International Boxing Federation super flyweight title.

Horn said the victory was so unexpected but called out the unbeaten welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather to face him, in an interview carried live over dzBB radio.

Pacquiao said he will be ready for the rematch with Horn later this year as stipulated in his contract, dzBB reported.

Horn forced the pace against the boxing legend and a headbutt on the sixth appeared to have slowed down Pacquiao, removing the sting from his deadly left hand.

Despite blood from the headbutt the 38-year-old Pacquiao showed the form that made him an eight-division champion as he dominated Horn with crisp punching in the ninth and 10th round but could not find the haymaker to end Horn's resistance.

Pacquiao could not uncork the knockout punch to put away Horn in the 11th and 12th round, as the Australian continued to sneak in counter punches. DMS
