October 31, 2017
TOKYO- The Japan Sumo Association said Monday it has promoted Onosho to the fourth-highest rank of komusubi for the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament set to start in the southwestern city of Fukuoka on Nov. 12.
The 21-year-old achieved the promotion after scoring double-digit wins in three grand tournaments in a row since his debut in the makuuchi top division. Every tournament lasts 15 days.
Onosho became the first sumo wrestler to achieve three consecutive double-digit records upon joining the makuuchi ranks since the 15-day tournament system was fully introduced in 1949.
Six tournaments are held every year and the association announces new ranks for each tournament based on records in the previous tournament.
In the latest rankings, Harumafuji won first place among the four yokozuna grand champions after winning the previous autumn grand tournament in September, where the other three were absent due to injuries.
Harumafuji was followed by Hakuho, Kisenosato and Kakuryu. Jiji Press
